FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

In August 2014, the University of Ghana adopted a new system of governance that has resulted in changes to the structure of the University, as well as that of the College. Under the new collegiate system, the School of Allied Health Sciences, together with the pre-clinical departments in the former Medical School have been merged to form the new School of Biomedical and Allied Health Science (SBAHS). It is has, therefore, become necessary to adequately staff and equip the School of Biomedical and Allied Health (SBAHS) to effectively deliver on its mandate of training an increased number of students for the clinical/professional school in basic and para-clinical sciences in the various departments. These subjects form the core knowledge that all the health professionals require to be able to undertake clinical/professional training.

Unfortunately, the number of academic faculty and researchers has not changed to match the increasing numbers of students. For several reasons, and until recently, younger consultants were not willing to join faculty, thus introducing a big hiatus in the age distribution of faculty.

The worst affected areas are the Basic Sciences and some of the Para-clinical departments like Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry, Physiology, Chemical Pathology, Pharmacology and Medical Microbiology. The situation is being contained currently due to scientists in some of these areas who are on post-retirement contract, but they are rapidly advancing in age. This is to replace the aging staff who have gone on retirement but are on contract or approaching retirement in the College

In view of this, about seventeen (17) Doctors have been selected to be awarded scholarships to undertake Fellowship programmes and PhD programmes, in the effort of building Faculty for the College.
